What Does an Art Consultant Actually Do?

By Francisco Alvarez

The term “art consultant” gets used a lot, but it is often misunderstood. Some people assume we simply recommend paintings to hang on walls. The reality is considerably more involved.

Here is a plain-language guide to what an experienced art consultant actually does, and how working with one can make a real difference.

Helping You Find the Right Artworks

The most fundamental part of the job is helping clients select artwork that genuinely suits their taste, their space, and their budget. This means understanding not just what looks good, but what will hold meaning over time. A consultant brings knowledge of artists, galleries, and markets that most buyers — even experienced ones — simply don’t have.

Navigating the Art Market

The art market is largely unregulated, often opaque, and can be genuinely intimidating to those unfamiliar with it. Part of a consultant’s job is to provide honest, independent guidance — free from the commercial interests that shape what galleries and auction houses recommend.

Managing the Entire Project

For commercial clients — hotels, developers, corporations, institutions — art consulting is a full project management service. This includes developing an art program concept, identifying and commissioning artists, managing budgets and timelines, overseeing installation, and producing all supporting documentation.

Building and Growing Art Collections

For private collectors, the work is often longer-term and more personal. I advise on acquisitions that will strengthen the collection as a whole, help clients understand the market for artists they already own, and provide guidance on care, insurance, and estate planning.

Supporting Other Art-Related Needs

Beyond collection building, art consultants work across a wide range of projects: public art programs, exhibition production, artist estate management, appraisals, and more. The scope of the work is as broad as the art world itself.

Why Work with a Consultant Rather Than a Gallery?

A gallery represents only its own roster of artists. Its job is to sell those artists’ work - which it does well, and serves an important function. A consultant’s job is different: to serve the client’s interests, drawing on the full breadth of what the market offers across multiple galleries, local and international.
